Daniel E. McGrory Retired CPD Lt., 87, of Chicago passed away on January 29, 2024. Cherished husband of 59 years to Kathleen, nee Sweeney. Caring father of five sons, Daniel, Jr. (Maya Vuksa), Martin (Jeannie), Timothy (Melissa), Michael (Elizabeth) and Matthew (Carol). Adored grandpa of Milton, Gabriel, Ryan, Owen, Mickey, Maeve and Nora. Loving son of the late Daniel and Winifred McGrory. Dear brother of Colleen (Peter) Cunningham, Sr. Jean, D.C., Maureen (David) Meister, Ellen (the late Keith) Leeders and the late Sr. Frances, S.P., Anne (the late Frank) Gallagher, Patricia, Margaret (the late James) Carey, Eileen (the late Dennis) Lyle, Michael and Cornelius. Fond uncle to many. Daniel will be missed by many friends and family, but especially by Kathleen, to whom Dan showed a lifetime of devotion. Dan retired a Lieutenant from the Chicago Police Department in 1999 after 35 years. He also was a proud founding member of and bagpiper for the Bagpipes and Drums of the Emerald Society the Chicago Police Department band started in 1982 to honor officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. The life-long Chicagoan graduated from St. Mel’s High School in 1954, the CPD Training Academy in 1964, Northwestern University Traffic Institute in 1978, and Northwestern University in 1982. Dan was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army in 1960 after having served in Sandhofen, Germany. In addition to playing the bagpipes, he took guitar and banjo lessons at the Old Town School of Folk Music for decades. He never met a musical instrument he wouldn’t buy. A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 4 from 2-7pm at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago IL 60646. Funeral Monday, February 5th 9:30am from the funeral home to 10am Mass at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, 6955 N Hiawatha Ave, Chicago IL 60646. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.
