Cherished grandfather of Molly Clare Murphy, Cara Bree Murphy, Cailin Quinn Murphy, Dylan Patrick Murphy, Brandon Lee Murphy. Beloved son of the late John Michael Murphy and Rosemary (nee Gormely) Murphy. Dear brother of Maureen (Walter) Gottesman, the late Sharon Nell Murphy. Patricia Joan (Neil) Resnick, Martha Murphy, and Mark (Nancy) Murphy. Fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Retired Lt. Jeffry Brian Murphy passed away suddenly on Wednesday May 13th, and it appears he did not suffer at all. Jeffry was born 11-08-50 in Fargo North, Dakota. Jeff, his father and his grandfather were all the oldest boys in their families, and they were all born November 8. Jeff was an avid reader. Without bragging or blinking an eye, he told me he completed the Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich in 7th grade.
Jeff had a tremendous 40-year career with the Chicago Police Department. Jeff actually started working for the CPD when he was a sophomore in high school at St. Ignatius. He earned many commendations and awards during his career. Jeff served as a Patrolman, Undercover Detective, Homicide Detective, Sergeant and eventually Lieutenant. During his career he contributed to various divisions within the Department including Policy And Procedure, Research And Development & Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). There was a time span where nearly every police cadet had some type of a course training from Jeff. But there could be no doubt that Jeff was most proud of his accomplishments regarding his contributions to Crisis Intervention programs. During the latter portion of his career, he was a national expert in Crisis Intervention and training. He went around the country teaching other departments how to institute this costly but very important training. His extended stay with CPD all those years was because he was adamant that everybody had to learn that even though Crisis Intervention programs were expensive to install, they would save municipalities and departments lives and money in the long run. Jeff enjoyed reading, sailing and golf.
